The narration describes her as this flawless angel-but she really isn’t at all, how could she be? The reason she gets to be with the Count at the end is that the scars on her heart and identity are so close to his, they are capable of the same virtues and vices. I think the most charitable reading of Haydee is that she, too, knows what it’s like to want vengeance, knows what it is to have one’s identity torn away and then plot and plan for the moment of satisfaction. B) Haydee is a character who is mostly in service to the Count, but ALSO has her own moment of revenge that is for her and not him. While I don’t think Haydee and the Count appeal to modern readers as a couple, I DO appreciate that a) Edmond cannot be with Mercedes again, he has sacrificed too much of himself to the altar of vengeance to really earn back the most poetically happy ending for himself. Yeah, I appreciated that the last third of the novel was less of a revenge tale and more of a “how can the Count stop the things he’s already put in motion” tale.
